For the seventh consecutive year, Eurobank Group was one of the Lead Sponsors of “The 18th Euromoney Central & Eastern European Forum” that was held in Vienna on the 15th-19th of January 2013.
With more than 1.500 delegates attending from all over Europe, the conference brought together the elite of the region and it was the place to meet for anyone doing business in Central and Eastern Europe. Prime Ministers, Finance ministers, Heads of IFIs, Central bank governors, leading businessmen, investors, IFI’s and key commentators from international media took to the stage to discuss the key topics affecting all areas of business and finance for the year ahead.
The Eurobank delegation headed by Mr. Michael Colakides, Deputy Group Chief Executive Officer and Head of Risk Management and by Mr. Stavros Ioannou, General Manager and Head of the International Division, had more than thirty participants including the Chief Executive Officers from Eurobank Bulgaria, Ms. Petia Dimitrova, and from Eurobank Serbia, Mr. Philippos Karamanolis, the Chairman of Bancpost Mr. Mihai Bogza, executive managers from Greece and the subsidiaries in the region and selected corporate clients from Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia and Cyprus.
The delegates heard keynote speeches from Sir Suma Chakrabarti, President of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), on the impact of the Eurozone crisis in the world economy, Mr. Petr Necas, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Mr. Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of Latvia, as well as many Central Bank Governors and Deputy Governors from most of the Central banks of the Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries.
During the Euromoney Conference in Vienna, Eurobank organized a workshop entitled: “Eurozone – Ins and Outs” where the panelists assessed the current eurozone situation and addressed the main questions regarding the future of the common European currency area.
The Workshop which had very impressive attendance from the Conference participants, was moderated by Mr. Theodore Karakassis, Advisor to the International Activities Division of Eurobank, and among the panel speakers were: Professor Gikas Hardouvelis, Chief Economist at Eurobank, Ms. Piroska NagyCountry Strategy & Policy Director at EBRD, Professor Kevin Featherstone, Head of the Contemporary Greek and European Studies department at LSE, Mr. Kalin Hristov, Deputy Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank and Mr. Constantine Papadopoulos Advisor on European and Economic Affairs at Eurobank and former General Secretary at the ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece.
As a Lead sponsor, Eurobank had panelists in two of the Conference’s main panel discussions: Mr. Stavros Ioannou, General Manager of Operations, Technology and Organization and Acting Head of the International Activities Division at Eurobank Group took part in the “Remaking CEE banking” round table discussion. Other speakers were: Ms. Piroska Nagy from EBRD, Mr. Gianni Franco Papa, Head of CEE Division at UniCredit, Dr. Herbert Stepic,Chief Executive Officer at Raiffeisen Bank International, and Mr. Zdenek Turek, Country Officer for Russia, Chief Executive Officer Central and Eastern Europe at Citi.
Mr. Ioannou underlined the need to further promote growth and development in the area and enhance cross border banking cooperation in order to rebuild domestic deposit bases and expand the CEE bank funding market. In addition, Mr. Ioannou referred to the European response and the ECB role in rebuilding the European model, changing the nature of CEE banking and the implications of the European Banking union in the CEE region.
The economic outlook for the European Union and the CEE region was examined at another panel entitled” CEE, Europe and the World” with the participation of Mr. Ioannis Gkionis, Research Economist at Eurobank Group.This was the seventh consecutive year that Eurobank Group was a main sponsor of the Euromoney Central & Eastern European Forum in Vienna, underlying its role as one of the leading banking institutions in Central and Eastern Europe.
